A range of experiential learning opportunities are available to students who spend a semester with the Brown in Paris program.

Field Study and Internships

The Office of Global Engagement is thrilled to announce several new pilot experiential learning opportunities that will be available to students who spend a semester with the Brown in Paris program.  These include opportunities for embedded field study—which take place during and throughout the Fall or Spring semester—and Spring+ internships—which give students the opportunity to add a six-to-seven week unpaid internship following the end of coursework for the Spring semester. Spaces are limited for each opportunity and participants will be selected by way of separate application processes, which are outlined in the description of each opportunity below.  

Embedded Field Study

Embedded field study experiences give Brown in Paris students the opportunity to earn Brown course credit while participating in supervised research or field study at a local partner institution in Paris. As an “embedded” semester experience, these field study opportunities are completed during and throughout the semester in Paris and form an integral part of the participants’ academic program in-country.  Specific opportunities are described below.

Overview:

Available Terms: 

  • Fall semester and Spring semester (beginning Spring 2026)

Academic Program: 

  • Participants accepted to the Embedded Neuroscience Research opportunity enroll in the following courses:
    • FREN 970B "Sociologies de Paris": the Brown in Paris Pro-seminar (mandatory)
    • NEURO 1970: a departmental independent study sponsored by a Brown faculty member from the Department of Neuroscience with lab research in Paris supervised by a Neuroscience researcher at Sciences Sorbonne (mandatory).
    • The equivalent of 2 more Brown credits of additional coursework at their choice at the local host institution (Lettres Sorbonne or Paris 8).

Eligibility / Selection Criteria: 

  • Must meet prerequisites for admission to Brown in Paris (i.e., good academic standing and the equivalent of a grade of B or higher in 6th-semester university-level French).
  • Priority will be given to Neuroscience concentrators that have taken NEURO 0010, NEURO 1020 and NEURO 1030

Application Process / Timeline: 

  • Students interested in applying for this opportunity for Spring 2026 will complete the following steps:
    • By September 1, 2025
      • Submit a brief Google Form to alert the Brown in Paris team that you are interested in applying for an experiential learning opportunity.
    • By September 15, 2025
      • Submit online application in ViaTRM for admission to Brown in Paris
      • Submit a statement of interest via email to Erin Reeser.  The statement of interest should address the candidate’s interest in and academic preparation for this research opportunity and describe how the candidate would positively contribute to the host lab. 
    • By October 1, 2025
      • The Department of Neuroscience will review statements of interest and academic transcripts and recommend finalists for consideration to the supervising researcher at Sciences Sorbonne.
    • By October 30, 2025
      • The supervising researcher at Sciences Sorbonne will review the application materials of the finalists and select a maximum of 1 to 2 students for admission to the Embedded Neuroscience Research opportunity.

Spring+ Internships

Brown in Paris is excited to announce several new pilot Spring+ internships, which give students the opportunity to add a six-to-seven week unpaid internship with specific partner organizations following the end of coursework for the Spring semester. Spaces for each Spring+ internship opportunity are limited and participants will be selected on the basis of a separate application process.  Specific opportunities are described below.

Overview:

  • The Ministry of Justice invites applications for a six-to-seven week unpaid internship in the Office of Diplomatic and Institutional Issues – Delegation of European and International Affairs. This internship is well suited for students interested in and/or concentrating in International and Public Affairs (IAPA), Political Science, or History and also for those considering a career in diplomacy or law.  

Eligibility:

  • Must meet prerequisites for admission to Brown in Paris (i.e., good academic standing and the equivalent of a grade of B or higher in 6th-semester university-level French).
  • Final selection will be made by the Ministry of Justice after an on-site interview at the beginning of the semester.

Application Process and Timeline:

  • By September 1, 2025
    • Submit a brief Google Form to alert the Brown in Paris team that you are interested in applying for an experiential learning opportunity.
  • By September 15, 2025
    • Submit online application in ViaTRM for admission to Brown in Paris
  • By November 1, 2025
    • Submit a resumé and a cover letter in French via email to Erin Reeser. The cover letter should address the candidate's interest in the specific internship, as well as their academic qualifications and any pertinent professional experience.
  • November and December 2025
    • The Brown in Paris team will share materials with the Ministry of Justice, who will review and select finalists to advance to an interview phase.
  • By mid-February 2026
    • Finalists will be interviewed on-site by the Ministry of Justice at the beginning of the semester.
    • The Ministry of Justice will select a maximum of 1 student per internship placement. 

Cost:

  • There is no additional tuition / program fee for this Spring+ internship. However, participants must pay for their housing and meals for the duration of their internship. Students accepted for this internship will be able to extend their stay in their Spring semester program-arranged housing for an additional charge of 400 euros.

Overview:

  • The Institut Curie invites applications for a six-to-seven week unpaid internship in the area of cancer research.
  • This internship is well suited for students interested and/or concentrating in the life sciences, chemistry or neuroscience.

Eligibility:

  • Must meet prerequisites for admission to Brown in Paris (i.e., good academic standing and the equivalent of a grade of B or higher in 6th-semester university-level French).
  • Final selection will be made by the hosting lab after an on-site interview at the beginning of the semester.

Application Process and Timeline:

  • By September 1, 2025
    • Submit a brief Google Form to alert the Brown in Paris team that you are interested in applying for an experiential learning opportunity.
  • By September 15, 2025
    • Submit online application in ViaTRM for admission to Brown in Paris
  • By November 1, 2025
    • Submit a resumé and a cover letter in French via email to Erin Reeser. The cover letter should address the candidate's interest in the specific internship, as well as their academic qualifications and any pertinent professional experience.
  • November and December 2025
    • The Brown in Paris team will share materials with the Institut Curie who will review and select finalists to advance to an interview phase.
  • By mid-February 2026
    • Finalists will be interviewed on-site by the Institut Curie at the beginning of the semester.
    • The Institut Curie will select a maximum of 1 student per internship placement. 

Cost:

  • There is no additional tuition / program fee for this Spring+ internship. However, participants must pay for their housing and meals for the duration of their internship. Students accepted for this internship will be able to extend their stay in their Spring semester program-arranged housing for an additional charge of 400 euros.

Overview:

  • Solidarité Roquette invites applications for a six-to-seven week unpaid internship in the area of community education and community outreach.
  • This internship is well suited for students concentrating in French and Francophone Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, Education and/or interested in community organizing, immigration, and education.

Eligibility:

  • Must meet prerequisites for admission to Brown in Paris (i.e., good academic standing and the equivalent of a grade of B or higher in FREN 600)
  • Final selection will be made by the host organization after an on-site interview at the beginning of the semester.

Application Process and Timeline:

  • By September 1, 2025
    • Submit a brief Google Form to alert the Brown in Paris team that you are interested in applying for an experiential learning opportunity.
  • By September 15, 2025
    • Submit online application in ViaTRM for admission to Brown in Paris
  • By November 1, 2025
    • Submit a resumé and a cover letter in French via email to Erin Reeser. The cover letter should address the candidate's interest in the specific internship, as well as their academic qualifications and any pertinent professional experience.
  • November and December 2025
    • The Brown in Paris team will share materials with Solidarité Roquette who will review and select finalists to advance to an interview phase.
  • By mid-February 2026
    • Finalists will be interviewed on-site by Solidarité Roquette at the beginning of the semester.
    • Solidarité Roquette will select a maximum of 1 student per internship placement. 

Cost:

  • There is no additional tuition / program fee for this Spring+ internship. However, participants must pay for their housing and meals for the duration of their internship. Students accepted for this internship will be able to extend their stay in their Spring semester program-arranged housing for an additional charge of 400 euros.
