Office of Global Engagement

Initiate a Global Partnership

The Office of Global Engagement is Brown University’s central coordinating office for establishing global institutional partnerships.

New Partnerships

Brown faculty wishing to propose a new institutional partnership should follow the procedural steps below.

1. Exploration

Prior to submitting a proposal, faculty should discuss the proposed partnership with the Office of Global Engagement (OGE) and their respective dean to affirm divisional support and alignment with unit priorities, identify the scope and scale of proposed activities, and confirm any relevant historical agreements or collaborations. These discussions will inform whether an institutional partnership agreement is required.

2. Proposal Submission and Review

Next, faculty need to submit a proposal to the Office of Global Engagement (OGE), for review and pre-approval by the Provost's Office. Please use this International Partnership Proposal Form to draft your proposal. If the partnering institution has provided a draft agreement, please submit along with your proposal. The Office of Global Engagement will communicate approval or feedback for recommended changes.

3. Draft Agreement Review

Once a proposal has been pre-approved, the Office of Global Engagement (OGE) will share a template for an international collaboration agreement (if needed) with the faculty or department for use in developing the draft agreement. Draft agreements should first be submitted to OGE for initial review; OGE will collaborate with the Office of General Counsel (OGC) and the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) as needed.

4. Finalizing the Agreement

Once the draft agreement has been reviewed by all parties to the agreement, OGE will oversee the execution of the agreement, including obtaining all relevant signatories. A fully executed copy of the agreement will be shared with all international parties.

Agreement Renewals

It is important to plan ahead when thinking about initiating the renewal of an existing institutional agreement. We recommend starting the agreement renewal process minimally 6 months prior to the expiration date of the current agreement. To initiate an agreement renewal, faculty/departments should submit an International Collaboration Activity Report to the Office of Global Engagement.

Following review and pre-approval from the Provost's Office, OGE will work with the faculty/department(s), and the Office of the General Counsel (OGC) to complete the agreement renewal process.
