Chris Van Booven, PhD

Assistant Director of Global Programs

Biography

Chris is responsible for supporting new and existing Brown-led study abroad and Brown exchange programs, for which he oversees the day-to-day management of institutional relationships and serves as an advisor for visiting students. In collaboration with resident staff, partner institutions, and Brown academic departments, Chris develops strategies for marketing, recruitment, and communications, provides program development and enrollment management support, and oversees assessment, evaluation, and reporting of related activities for these programs.

Prior to joining Brown, Chris served as Assistant Director of Study Abroad at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, where he managed a portfolio of study abroad programs and coordinated international risk management and assessment for the Office of Study Abroad. He also served as a co-facilitator for a January-term study abroad program in the Dominican Republic at New York University and taught undergraduate and graduate coursework in Spanish and applied linguistics at Hunter College, New York University, and UMass Dartmouth. 

Chris holds a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and linguistics and a master’s degree in second language education from the University of Southern California. He also completed a Ph.D. in Multilingual Multicultural Studies (Bilingual Education) at New York University, where his research focused on study abroad as a context for second language development. He is fluent in Spanish.
